Outpatient Treatment Programs Assessment Interviews
Any treatment provided by the IIAR begins with a comprehensive evaluation for the presence of chemical addiction and/or compulsive behaviors. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are also accepted. There is no charge for the assessment.
An addiction is not always easy to identify, and certain circumstances dictate a high degree of confidence in the assessment and diagnostic process. Individuals employed in the transportation industry, law enforcement, or other professions involving public safety are often screened for drugs. When a positive result is obtained, an evaluation is needed that both the employer and the employee are comfortable with before the individual returns to work. When a high degree of confidence is required, the intensity of this program is appropriate. For more information about this program or any of the Institute's counseling and treatment programs, please call 1-800-522-3784.The Intensive Assessment Service is an Outpatient Program designed to provide a thorough diagnostic assessment for chemical dependency or compulsive gambling. The patient is evaluated by a team of professionals, consisting of a physician, a licensed psychologist, a certified addiction counselor, a registered nurse, and a chaplain. After several days of interviews, tests and observation, the patient is diagnosed by the physician as either addicted or not addicted. If the patient is addicted, specific types of addiction are identified and treatment recommendations are made.
The evaluation begins with an overnight stay in the hospital. The stay is less than 24 hours in length, and is not considered a day of Inpatient Treatment for insurance purposes. During this initial assessment, thorough medical, laboratory and nursing assessments are completed, and the patient is carefully observed for signs of physical withdrawal from alcohol and other addictive drugs.
During the period of assessment, 20 discreet evaluations are completed by the treatment team. Each of these evaluations examines the effect of chemical use/gambling activity on specific areas of the individual's life. Some of the evaluations include psychological adjustment and mental status, legal problems, vocational adjustment, nutrition, co-dependency, family relationships, and educational adjustment. As problems are identified they are cataloged into a record, which begins to compile an accurate portrait of the patient and his/her long-term relationship with alcohol, drugs and/or gambling. Random drug screening is also conducted during that period.
While the process of evaluation continues, the patient participates in ongoing individual and group therapy. After approximately seven days, the evaluating team assembles a composite picture of the patient, and assigns a firm diagnosis with treatment recommendations, if appropriate.
This thorough assessment requires a positive commitment of time, and may be conducted on an inpatient or outpatient basis.
