This training will consist of a 30-hour course delivered throughout a five-day series. It will provide participants with the requisite knowledge for the State of Illinois written certification exam for counselors of problem and compulsive gambling. It also meets the coursework requirements for the national gambling certification. At the end of this workshop, participants will have developed a strong clinical base for compulsive gambling issues as well as cultural competencies and client-centered treatment for compulsive gamblers and their families. Training participants will be visiting the local casino as part of the training.
About the speakers
Licensed and Certified staff from The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery (IIAR) will be providing the training. The IIAR provides a full continuum of care for the treatment of chemical dependency, as well as gambling, food, Internet, sex, and compulsive spending addictions as well as chronic pain with addiction.

Family Meeting Approach Intervention Training

This workshop will:
- Describe the underlying philosophy and principles of the Family Meeting Approach to Intervention and how to utilize this approach to assist families in addressing issues related to Addiction and other problems impacting upon the family system
- Review the Johnson, Systemic and the ARISE Models of Family Interventions
- Increase familiarity for coaching “Concerned Other” through the process of developing a support system in order to facilitate the Intervention
- Provide practical information in order to implement Intervention techniques within a clinician’s practice
- Educate participants on becoming certified as an Interventionist
- Address how to determine what Intervention approach or Model to use
- Learn how to assess for “Safety Issues”
- Provide Intervention techniques to address Process Addictions, such as gambling, food, sex, Internet, compulsive shopping/spending
Didactic lecture, video case vignettes, role-plays, and interactive group discussion will be utilized to facilitate the learning process.
About the speakers:
Phil Scherer is the Clinical Coordinator for the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery. Mr. Scherer is certified through the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association at the supervisor level. Mr. Scherer is a certified Problem and Compulsive Gambling Counselor as well as a Mental Illness and Substance Abuse II professional. Mr. Scherer is also certified through the American Compulsive Gambling Counselor Certification Board and the National Council on Problem Gambling as a counselor of problem gamblers. Mr. Scherer is a trained Board-Registered interventionist and a member of the Association of Intervention Specialists.

Mr. Prin will examine relevant research data and demonstrate effective ways to use these custom-designed worksheets, questionnaires, charts, and mini-lectures. One such exercise focuses on clients’ secrets and how these individuals can disclose sensitive information in a constructive manner. Integrated into this seminar are research and insights from the work of Cardwell Nuckols, Harry Tiebout, William White, Earnie Larsen, and Bill Wilson. Attend this training and learn the ways clients can take self-responsibility for their recovery attitudes and behavior, and how they can boost their resistance to relapse while reaping the rewards of healthy recovery.
About the speaker:
John Howard Prin, LADC, BA is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor who specializes in helping people who are recovering from addictions experience the joys and rewards of lifelong recovery. Mr. Prin also works with the professionals who serve these individuals through his company True You Recovery, Inc. in Minneapolis. Mr. Prin speaks at several national conferences and inspires audiences with his expertise and passion for sobriety. He has authored three recovery books. Stolen Hours and Secret Keeping address the ways people get trapped in unhealthy secret habits and offer effective methods to restore healthy behavior. His third book, The Roadmap to Lifelong Recovery Guidebook.

Sexual Addiction, manifested by a wide variety of behaviors, and the most current epidemic of cybersex addiction, also called the “Crack Cocaine of the 21st Century,” are presenting with ever increasing frequency. Cindy will review the signs and types of both sex and cybersex addictions / compulsivity. Screening tools, specific treatment strategies, practical relapse prevention techniques and treatment resources will be discussed during this workshop.
About the Speaker:
Cynthia (Cindy) Power is co-founder and co-owner of Life Enrichment Services, Inc., a Wheaton, Illinois based private practice. She has worked with a variety of couples, families and groups in the greater Chicago area for over thirty years. Cindy received her M.A. degree in Clinical Psychology from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. She is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the State of Illinois.
Since 1979 Cindy has been a Certified Sex Counselor through the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists. In 2001, Cindy became a Certified Sex Addictions Therapist, through the International Institute for Trauma & Addiction Professionals (IITAP) and is a CSAT Certifier, facilitating other professionals completing their CSAT Certification. She is also a Certified Addictions Specialist, specifically in eating disorders and sex addiction, through the American Academy of Health Care Providers in the Addictive Disorders (now merged with NATI). She is a Certified Compulsive Gambling Counselor through the American Compulsive Gambling Counselors Certification Board, and a Certified Problem & Compulsive Gambling Counselor through the Illinois Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association. In December of 2002, Cindy became an Internationally Certified Gambling Counselor through the American Compulsive Gambling Counselor Board. Cindy is a trainer and consultant to a number of Regional Programs and Agencies. For the last twenty five years she has been actively presenting nationally and in Canada.

After an introduction to compulsive buying and the sociocultural context within which it exists, I’ll talk about how to identify and assess compulsive buying behavior, discuss the indications and contraindications for treatment, diagnostic issues, prevalence, etiology and functions of the addiction. An overview of the existing treatment modalities and adjuncts will be followed by a detailed explication and demonstration of several easily learned and effectives strategies for working with compulsive buyers, both individually and in group. Participants who want to can also do some experiential work on their personal shopping and money issues.
About the Speaker:
April Lane Benson, Ph.D., is a nationally known psychologist who specializes in the treatment of compulsive buying disorder. She is the co-founder of the Center for the Study of Anorexia and Bulimia, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, both in New York. She’s been in private practice in New York City for over 30 years.
